Steamboat has a rich Western spirit, mountain-town character, and a few fun stories that make the area feel even more memorable.
The town got its name from a natural mineral spring that early settlers said sounded like a steamboat chugging along the river. The original “steamboat” spring no longer sounds the same, but the name stuck and became part of the town’s identity.
Steamboat is famous for its light, dry snow known as Champagne Powder. It’s one of the area’s best-known legends and a big reason skiers and snowboarders love coming here.
Steamboat is often called Ski Town, U.S.A. because of its deep ski heritage and the many Olympic athletes who have trained here. Guests may see reminders of that history around town and at the resort.
